Mobile broadband devices have evolved and moved on dramatically in the last few years.
Brands such as Huawei and Sierra have turned devices into more than just plug in USB devices.
The latest models from Huawei are now full WiFi hot spots and some even contain powerbanks to charge mobile devices.
Such devices can prove to be expensive when bought sim free but buying one sim locked to a certain network can prove to be very cost effective.
The downside of this is it may not be the network you currently use.
